The TV ad interrogation about insurance companies requiring locks conforming to the British standard of 3621 accreditation has been popular.
The BS 3621 standard is when a lock is classed as “thief resistant.” This includes burlgary methods such as picking and drilling the lock.
Approved by locksmiths
Symbols you will see on insurance approved locks. Tests passed by the MLA carry a diamond and the star rating.
Approved by the Police
The "design out crime" Police campaign by use of physical security equipment. Locks with this design have undergone testing.
Approved by the British Standards
Ultion locks are credited with the highest 3 star rating. This is the symbol most people will recognise on their insurance approved locks.
Euro cylinder lock
This lock is mostly found on UPVC doors, Composite doors, patio doors, French doors and some garage doors.

Mortice locks
Mortice locks are found on wood doors and commercial properties that have metal doors.
The lock needs to display the BS 3621 stamp mark to meet insurance and police recommendations.
Mortice locks
Mortice locks are very secure and can be replaced with euro lock cylinders.
Keyed alike means you only need to carry a single key to open the front door, back door, garage and padlock.
Rim Cylinder
To conform to BS 3621 accreditation, mortice locks must have 5 levers installed within and:
- Measures to prevent picking those 5 levers.
- At least 1000 key differs.
- Anti-Pick qualities.
- Anti-drill type hard plates installed.
- Have a minimum of a 20mm bolt throw into the door frame itself.
Night Latch
This lock is found on the outside area of the door installed within a night latch mechanism that is installed and used on the inside of the door.
The night latch mechanism and similar versions by other companies should display the accreditation on the side.
Multi point lock
A UPVC or composite door multi-point lock is located at the side of the door.
The multiple hooks and bolts in the door prevent weak points along the door edge.
Ensure your euro cylinder is TS007 3-star standard for maximum security.
The new insurance & police approved standard is PAS3621 which is equivalent to the BS3621 standard.
The only problem with this PAS3621 accreditation is that the majority of older multi-point mechanisms cannot be retro replaced with the new PAS3621 accreditation mechanisms.
Doncaster Locksmith advise to have a TS007 3-star Ultion lock together with a 2-star Security Handle for maximum protection.
